Driver CPC Test FAQ
-
What are the different parts of the Driver CPC test, and how are they structured?
The Driver CPC test is comprised of four parts. Part 1 is a theory test, consisting of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. Part 2 is a case studies test using short scenarios with multiple-choice questions. Part 3a is an off-road practical test including maneuvers like an ‘S’ shaped reverse. Finally, Part 3b is an on-road driving test and Part 4 is a practical demonstration test.
-
Can I take the Driver CPC test parts in any order?
While you don’t need to complete all the tests in numerical order, there are some prerequisites. You can book the part 1 and part 2 tests as soon as you have a provisional license. However, you must pass part 1 before you can take part 3a, and you must pass part 2 before you can book part 4.
-
What is covered in the Driver CPC Part 1 Theory Test, and how do I prepare?
The Part 1 theory test includes two parts: multiple-choice questions (100 in 1 hour 55 minutes, pass mark 85/100) and a hazard perception test (19 video clips, pass mark 67/100). The questions are based on The Highway Code, Know your traffic signs, and The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles or The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Buses and Coaches. You can prepare using these books, online resources, or practice tests.
-
What does the Driver CPC Part 2 Case Studies Test involve?
Part 2 consists of 7 case studies, which are short scenarios based on real-life driving situations. Each case study is followed by 5 to 10 multiple-choice questions. The test lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes, with a pass mark of 40 out of 50. The test is computer-based, and like Part 1, is based on the Highway Code, Know your Traffic Signs, and the appropriate Official DVSA Guides.
-
What does the Driver CPC Part 3a Off-Road Test consist of, and what do I need to bring?
Part 3a involves an off-road exercise, including an 'S' shaped reverse into a bay and, if testing with a trailer, the uncoupling and recoupling procedure. The test lasts up to 30 minutes. You must bring an appropriate vehicle (HGV or bus/coach), your theory test pass certificate, and your driving license (photocard or paper plus passport).
-
What are the time constraints and certificate validity periods for the Driver CPC tests?
You must pass both parts of the Part 1 theory test within 2 years of each other to get your theory test certificate. Your Part 3a test certificate is only valid for 6 months; within this time you must pass Part 3b. Your Part 2 pass letter is valid for two years, within which time you must pass Part 4. Failing to meet these deadlines requires re-taking the expired parts of the test.
-
What happens if I fail any part of the Driver CPC test, and how soon can I re-test?
If you fail any of the tests, you will receive a results letter with feedback. You can book another test immediately, but you cannot take it for at least three clear working days for the theory and case studies tests, or 24 hours for the practical test.
-
What is the purpose of the Driver CPC tests, and is passing all parts required to drive professionally?
The Driver CPC tests are designed to ensure commercial drivers have the necessary knowledge and skills to operate large vehicles safely and professionally. Passing all four parts (Parts 1, 2, 3a, 3b and 4) is required for a person to be qualified to drive an HGV or bus/coach commercially in the UK. Passing some parts is necessary but not sufficient for complete certification.
